Michael Van Every Passes Away

It is with regret that we advise of the passing of former Jockey Club of Canada Steward and long-time Member, Michael Van Every.

Mr. Van Every passed away peacefully at his home in Nobleton, Ontario on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 in his 72nd year.

A celebration of life gathering will be held at his home in Nobleton on Saturday, May 11.

2012 Sovereign Award Winners

Owner John Oxley and Trainer Mark Casse enjoyed a big night at the 38th Annual Sovereign Award Ceremony on Friday, April 19 at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Canada.

Mr. Oxley was awarded Outstanding Owner for 2012 and his Woodbine-based trainer, Mark Casse, was awarded Outstanding Trainer.  Two Oxley, Casse team juveniles, Spring in the Air and Uncaptured were named Champion 2-year-olds in their respective categories for 2012 and Uncaptured was also given 2012 Horse of the Year honours.

Mark Casse was also the trainer of note for the Eugene Melnyk homebred, Roxy Gap, who was named Champion Older Female and Champion Female Sprinter of 2012.

2013 Inductees to Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame Announced

World Class racing greats Secretariat and Niatross headline the field of 13 new Hall of Fame inductees under new rules that allow international competitors into Canada’s Hall.  There will be a total of three horses and three people representing Standardbreds, along with three horses and four people from the Thoroughbred ranks entering the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in August 2013.  CLICK HERE for complete list of 2013 Inductees

2013 Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame Nominees Announced

Racing greats Secretariat and Niatross figure prominently on the 2013 Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame election ballot which reflects the changes announced earlier this year.  Eligibility now includes those people and horses who brought honour to Canadian horse racing.

Also new to this year’s ballot is the Communicators category, added to honour those who have been instrumental in telling the story of Canadian racing.  A total of 36 horses and people, including 18 Thoroughbred racing candidates and 18 Standardbred racing candidates appear on the ballot. Two 20-person  Election Committees will decide the winners in the respective categories and the election results will be announced on Tuesday, April 9th.

ORC Multi-Breed & Multi-Year Licenses

As part of current efforts to modernize its operations and streamline licencing processes, the Ontario Racing Commission (ORC) has launched two separate licencing pilot programs.  Creating a multi-breed licence for specific categories will ease the licencing burden on individuals who operate across all breeds. Similarly re-introducing

2013 Graded Stakes in Canada

March 6, 2013, Toronto – Maple Leaf Stakes Receives Graded Status Once Again

The Jockey Club of Canada’s Graded Stakes Committee held its annual review of the Graded Stakes in Canada, and has announced there will be a total of 43 Graded Stakes in 2013, up from 42 in 2012.
