2004 Canadian Thoroughbred Ratings

The Canadian Thoroughbred Ratings Committee this year included Ray Miller of Assiniboia Downs, Lorne Mitchell of Hastings Racecourse, Fred Hilts of Northlands Park, Barry McGrath of Stampede Park and Chris Evans of the Woodbine Entertainment Group. The Committee once again used the International Classifications Method to rate eligible horses.

Eligible for weighting were all horses that ran in stakes in Canada in 2004. Equally, rated horses may appear in multiple divisions, on both dirt and turf. The highest rating achieved in North America has been used for each category.

Canadian Thoroughbred Ratings were compiled based on stakes performances over the year with respect to weights carried, beaten lengths, class of competition and other impressions from which a horse’s relative merits were assessed. Categories have been split into five different distances designated by a letter S,M,I,L,E. A distance category is shown with each rating along with the name of the race where the horse achieved their highest rating. The definitions agreed to for each distance are as follows:

Distance:

  • Sprint - 7 furlongs and under
  • Mile - 7.1 furlongs to 9.45 furlongs
  • Intermediate - 9.5 furlongs to 13.5 furlongs
  • Long - 10.51 furlongs to 13.5 furlongs
  • Extended - 13.51 furlongs and over (Combined with Long in North America)

Horses rated at 115 or higher were discussed and agreed to at the International Classifications Conference that took place in December 2004. Horses rated at 114 or under were considered “domestic” and the same system of weight carried/ beaten lengths/ class competition was applied.

The highest rated male in Canada this year was Sulamani as a result of his win in the
1 _ mile Pattison Canadian International hosted by Woodbine. Sulamani earned a rating on the Long/Extended Turf list of 121 followed by Mubtaker and Simonas at 117.

The highest rated filly was Commercante with an Intermediate rating of 113, followed by Punctilious at 112 who also earned the same rating on the Long/Extended Turf list. Both fillies ran in the E.P. Taylor stakes at Woodbine in October where Commercante was victorious.

As in previous years, two-year olds were not assigned a distance. Flamenco topped the males at 109 and Paddy’s Daisy topped the filly list at 107.
