J.F. (Jake) Howard, former WEG Chairman, passes away

J.F. (Jake) Howard, Thoroughbred horseman, and past Chairman of the Board of the Directors for The Ontario Jockey Club/Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) and a long time member of the Jockey Club of Canada passed away on June 3rd at the age of 81.

Howard, owner of Wayward Farm, a successful Thoroughbred breeding farm located in Woodbridge, Ontario, was involved in Canadian racing for over 30 years. An avid owner of both Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds, Howard bred and owned Questuary, a filly set to compete in the $500,000 Labatt Woodbine Oaks at Woodbine Racetrack this Sunday.

Other horses Howard sent out include 1999 Lady Angela Stakes winner Millashand and 1996 Ontario Lassie Stakes winner Mordacious, dam of Questuary, both of whom are Ontario-breds.

A memorial service for Howard will be held on June 23 at Woodbine Racetrack in the Northern Dancer Room from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a contribution to the Princess Margaret Hopsital Foundation (www.pmhf.ca) would be appreciated by the family.
