The Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame Inducts Nine New Members

MISSISSAUGA, ON – A crowd of more than 300 flocked to the Mississauga Convention Centre last night to attend the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame 2007 Induction Ceremony & Silent Auction. Nine new members were formally entered to the Hall, now in its 31st year.

The class of 2007 was headlined by Windfields Farm's Natalma, the mare whose first foal, Northern Dancer, was the catalyst in creating a global thoroughbred dynasty, and Bettors Delight, a winner of the Little Brown Jug and one of Canada's greatest pacing colts. They joined four other horses, Queen's Plate winners Jammed Lovely, L'Enjoleur and Canadian Champ along with the standardbred champion racing filly and stakes producing broodmare, Cathedra.

In the Builders’ category Russ and Lois Bennett of Kelowana, BC, the leading thoroughbred breeders for two decades in British Columbia, became the first ever husband and wife team to be inducted into the Hall. Jack McNiven of Ingersoll, Ont., who headed Killean Acres, one of the leading standardbred breeding operations in the country for over 40 years was also elected as well as Sovereign Award winning jockey Chris Loseth of Vancouver, BC.

The annual induction ceremony and fundraiser celebrated all nine inductees with class and entertainment. The goal of the evening was to celebrate the accomplishments of those that have made momentous contributions to Canadian horse racing.

The Hall of Fame welcomed race analyst Jim Bannon as Master of Ceremonies and featured the very humorous Jim Ralph, former minor league goalie, as guest speaker.

Queen's Plate winning thoroughbred jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson, the first female jockey to record a victory in the Plate (aboard Mike Fox), was on hand to sign Plate Day programs and Bob Dickenson, professional auctioneer for Standardbred Canada, teamed up with Jim Ralph for the live auction portion of the evening.

Each year members of both the standardbred and thoroughbred horse racing communities generously donate items to the Hall’s silent auction. Over $10,000 was raised for the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame allocated to the New Panels Project. Upon completion of The New Panels Project, the Hall will for the first time see each and every inductee recognized simultaneously at Woodbine Racetrack, its Toronto, ON home.
