Sovereign Awards Changes and Important Dates

The 33rd annual Sovereign Awards Dinner will be held at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto on Friday, December 14, 2007. Commencing this year there will be a number of changes to the voting criteria for the Sovereign Awards. A complete list of the Rules, Eligibility and Selection is available to be downloaded from the website at

www.jockeyclubcanada.com.

A summary of those changes includes the following:

  • 2-year-olds will only have to make two starts in Canada, prior to the cut off date to qualify for Sovereign Awards consideration.  Horses 3-year-old and up will continue to be required to make three starts prior to the cutoff date to qualify.    The cut off date for eligibility this year will be Sunday, November 25, 2007.
  • The rule regarding voting for Outstanding Broodmare, a lifetime achievement award has been changed to allow stakes placed progeny instead of just winners.
  • The rule regarding turf performances has been deleted and as a result two category names will change – Older Male on Main Track and Older Female on Main Track
  • The information provided on owners will only be reflective of racing in Canada rather than the accomplishments of Canadian born owners racing abroad.
  • Contestants will now be allowed to enter submissions that have appeared on the internet provided the website is affiliated with a printed publication recognized by the Jockey Club of Canada.

Eligible voters may begin voting online at 9:00 am (ET) on Wednesday, November 28, 2007 and must cast their final ballots by 5:00 p.m. (ET) on Monday, December 3, 2007.  PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP Chartered Accountants will continue to audit the process and will release the names of the three finalists in the fourteen divisional categories to The Jockey Club of Canada for release to the public on Thursday, December 6, 2007.   The three finalists for Horse of the Year will not be announced until the night of the awards presentation.

Submissions to the four media categories must be received in the office of The Jockey Club of Canada, no later than 5:00 p.m. (ET) on Wednesday, October 31, 2007.  The four media categories are: Feature Story, Newspaper Article, Photograph and Film/Video/Broadcast. Submissions must be of Canadian Thoroughbred racing or breeding content and must have been published/aired between November 1, 2006 and October 31, 2007.  Contestants in the media categories are limited to one submission per category.  In the event that more than one submission is received in any category, the author, photographer or producer/director will be asked to decide which submission should be entered. All submissions must be original works that have not previously been submitted to the Sovereign Awards for consideration.
