The 2007 Canadian Thoroughbred Ratings were complied by Steve Lym, Racing Secretary, Woodbine Entertainment Group and are published by The Jockey Club of Canada.

Any horse that competed in a Stake Race in Canada in 2007 was eligible to be rated on their best performance at any distance. Canadian Thoroughbred Ratings are determined by applying a criteria similar to that used by the World Thoroughbred Rankings panel to rate horses using the following distance categories: Sprint – Mile – Intermediate – Long – Extended. Sprint ratings cover races up to 7 ½ furlongs. Mile distances include those greater than 7 ½ furlongs and less than 1-3/16 miles. Intermediate distances range from 1-3/16 miles to 1-5/16 miles. The Long and Extended categories are combined and cover any distance longer than 1-5/16 miles. Weight concessions and a beaten-lengths formula are also factored into the ratings.

Cloudy’s Knight and Kip Deville tied for top ratings overall in Canada. Cloudy’s Knight, Canada’s Champion Turf Horse in 2007, scored 119 for his 1st place performance in the Pattison Canadian International G1 and Kip Deville scored 119 for his 2nd place finish in the Bell Woodbine Mile G1 on the E.P. Taylor turf course at Woodbine. Mrs. Lindsay, scored 116 for her first place finish in the E.P. Taylor Stakes G1, while Sealy Hill, Canada’s Horse of the Year scored 115 for her 2nd place finish behind Mrs. Lindsay in the E.P. Taylor Stakes.

Financingavailable Canada’s Champion Sprinter in 2007 leads the Sprint distance category with a rating of 107 for her 1st place finish in the Ontario Fashion Stakes on the Polytrack at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto. Le Cinquieme Essai earned a rating of 110 for his Sprint distance performance on the turf in the Play the King G2 at Woodbine.

In the Intermediate distance category, True Metropolitan, Champion Older Male in Canada in 2007 and 2006 earned a rating of 110 for his 1st place performance in the Autumn Stakes at Woodbine.

In the Long distance category, True Metropolitan scored 111 for his 2nd place finish in the BC Premiers Handicap at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver.

2-year-old filly Clearly Foxy earned a rating of 105 for her win in the Natalma Stakes G3 and 2-year-old colt Prussian earned a rating of 107 for his victory in the Summer Stakes G3 at Woodbine.

The Canadian Graded Stakes Committee met recently to review 138 open races carrying purses of $45,000 or more. Once again this year graded status was assigned to 37 Canadian stakes.

To qualify for graded status in Canada in 2008 races must carry the following minimum purses; $250,000 - G1, $150,000 - G2 and $100,000 - G3.

Only one race, the Lieutenant Governors’ Stakes run at Hastings Racecourse in Vancouver lost its graded status and commencing in 2008 will be a listed race. The following races at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto were upgraded; The Northern Dancer Breeders’ Cup Turf G1, the Autumn Stakes G2 and the Singspiel G3.
