As Canada’s largest racing jurisdiction, the horse racing and breeding industry in Ontario is vital for the overall health of the entire thoroughbred industry in Canada.  Ontario’s industry is highly regarded as a world leader and showcases quality racing through its successful business model.

The Jockey Club of Canada views the announcement by the Ontario Government to cancel the existing Slots at Racetracks Program as a serious concern which has immediately impacted not only the Ontario industry but the industry across Canada.

The long term partnership between the OLG and the horse racing industry in Ontario is a program which has proven successful and extremely profitable for the Government. In particular, the success of this partnership has made Woodbine Entertainment Group (WEG) a world leader in the thoroughbred horse racing industry.

The Jockey Club of Canada supports all initiatives for the Ontario Government to work cooperatively with the industry association OHRIA to seize the opportunities afforded by Woodbine Race Track in terms of its infrastructure and location; professional and proven management; and international reputation in order to continue to grow the thoroughbred industry for the benefit of the huge population of stakeholders across Canada.

The Jockey Club of Canada also supports all initiatives to work with the industry to ensure that the Slots closure at Fort Erie has a minimal impact on racing at Ontario’s historic race track.
